Very nice, we have a shop near in Bomyard Herefordshire, it's the golly shop, and full of golly's of all knids.

It came in for a bit of trouble, but is still going I think

Bromyard will soon have its own shop dedicated to selling gollies in a rainbow of different colours.

The Crystal Door, a four-floor building on Broad Street, will also have a children's education area, sun terrace and artists' club.

People will be able to order customised gollies, as well as buying dolls in different colours and limited editions, such as World Cup golly, fairy golly, or teenage golly.

Inspired by the Bromyard Three - the gollies seized by police from Pettifers general store in High Street for being offensive - one will even be wearing a prison suit.

The Crystal Door will also sell golly paraphernalia including porcelain figures, mugs and plates made by Malvern's Bronte Porcelain and its sister company Whitehaven Pottery.

The shop is the brainchild of Stuart Redfern who wants to use the golly as a "symbol of change".

He says he wants to "trash racial stereotypes" to create a harmonious town, as well as making a stand against the Public Order Act, the legislation under which the gollies where seized from Pettifers in March.

Mr Redfern believes the legislation, which outlaws the display of offensive material that may cause or is likely to lead to alarm, harassment or distress, is frightening.

He says he stands for racial harmony and has begun writing The Golly Chronicles, a series of educational children's stories starring different coloured gollies, with artwork by local artist Cynthia Waterman.

Mr Redfern says the shop itself will be an artistic creation, with the sign painted in 24-carat gold leaf and featuring a crystal, so that when the sun rises over Bromyard it will reflect the light.

Orders can be placed, or donations made to the education centre, by emailing the.crystaldoor@btinternet.com.

A DEMONSTRATION was held outside Bromyard Police Station in support of a shopkeeper caught up in a golliwog racism debate.

People waved banners and posters backing Donald Reynolds after police raided his store and took away three golliwog dolls from his window display.

Officers went to Pettifers hardware and gift store in the High Street after a visitor to Bromyard complained to the police about the dolls.

The police said they were acting under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which outlaws the display of offensive material which may cause, or is likely to lead to alarm, harassment or distress.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service has now confirmed there will be no action taken against the shop owner.

Mr Reynolds said he was amazed by the publicity generated by the seizure - and by the support he had received.

"Everyone seems to agree that there is nothing racist about the dolls," he said.

"They are just very popular and people like to see them back."

The 53-year-old said Monday's protest was a light-hearted attempt to make a point against over-the-top political correctness that he blamed for the seizure.

Neil Tipton, for Herefordshire Police, said the golliwogs would shortly be returned to Mr Reynolds and a letter would be sent out to the shopkeeper advising him about the sensitivity surrounding the controversial dolls.

The first golliwogs were caricatures of American black-faced minstrels and during the first half of the 20th Century they were second only to the teddy bear in popularity.

However, the golliwogs increasingly became to be seen as offensive caricatures of black people that played on negative racial stereotypes and their name became a racist slur.

The golliwog is also known as the logo of Herefordshires Ledbury jam-maker's Robertsons but it was dropped five years ago as "old-fashioned".

Mr Reynolds promised to continue selling golliwogs and said the seized dolls would be sold at auction with the proceeds going to St Michael's Hospice, the Bromyard Hospital and a breast cancer charity.

We all love the golly's here, so welcome Mr Golly

Holly

good story of how stupid some people can be and how the police can act without thinking or investigating.
