Question Are you hot hot hot!!

Are you hot hot hot!!

In this topic we take a look at vehicle air-conditioning systems and what the DIY Guy can and can't take on!!

For more Trade Tech info join our trade club pay site.

First lets take a look at the The do's and Don'ts of the Cars Air Con

Do identify the refrigerant in the system
correctly before carrying out any work

Do store containers of refrigerant
chemicals in a safe place away from heat or sun light

Do wear appropriate eye protection,
gloves and other protective equipment
when handling the refrigerant or working on the system

Do make adequate arrangements for the
safe recovery and disposal of old or
waste refrigerant, including any contained in
scrap receptacles or equipment

Do check that all the refrigerant has been
recovered before removing any part of the airconditioning
system

Don't assume that the system is free from
refrigerant gases until proved otherwise
(for example with a system pressure gauge)

Don't mix refrigerants R12 and R134a when
recharging the system. Check with
manufacturers before blending alternative
chemicals

Don't deliberately discharge refrigerants R12
and R134a into the atmosphere

Don't allow smoking, welding, burning or other
hot work in areas where refrigerants R12
and R134a may be present as this could
produce harmful gases. If the refrigerant
comes into contact with a hot surface, this
can also produce harmful gases

Don't carry out welding, soldering, burning or
other hot work on or near air-conditioning
systems as this could raise the pressure inside
the system and cause an explosion

Here are the air con recharge kits you can buy, they run around 60-00 for a top up, they will work but most of the time don't as there can be a fault in the system, best way is to buy a gauge kit and test the system before using one, here we show you what to buy and how to test the system before a recharge using a top up can.

Here is the kit we use, however you can buy a gauge kit only for 35-00 on the internet.

It will tell you all is well before adding your 60-00 can of top up, and you can use your gauge kit anytime to check your system when you know how.

In the next one on this topic we will show you how to fit the gauge kit and run a rest test, leak and comp: test, and how to recharge using these cans with the gauge kit

nice info guys some manufacturers hide one or both of the ports so you can't do it yourself. i had to go to the internet to find the hidden port on our ford focus, they hid it behind the right side inner fender.

Next in this topic we will look at a system rest test and what we will see.

This topic should give some good pointers to those using small gas top up, as the price of the gas has gone through the roof, dubble in price if not more, for the trade and DIY kits.

It's is no longer just suck it and see, you really need to know if your system just needs a top up, or if there is more to it

Trouble is the small gauge on the refil can will tell you very little about the system, you need to see rest and running pressures to know if your system just needs a top up, has a leak or comp: trouble or more.

more good info holly thanks. had trouble with the a/c in my truck last year, the compressor wouldn't come on. i put the gauges on and it showed pressure but the compressor wouldn't engage. after searching for hours i found some critter had chewed the wires off the low pressure cut off a few crimp ons and some silicone and we were back in the cold again. you never know what can happen.
